Mauve

Surprising myself, most of all: I’ve been able to continue breastfeeding Kellan, 9 months and counting!

With Lucia, I went back into an office after my maternity leave and pumped at increasingly irregular hours due to a steady flow of meetings and guilt-laden stares by my then-manager (I wrote a little about that experience here). My already-limited supply tanked further, so by 4 months postpartum we needed to supplement with formula and by 6 months postpartum, my supply had run dry.

This experience with Kellan has been altogether so much better. Even though I started with low supply (we had to supplement formula starting at 2 weeks old), I’ve been able to maintain it. I breastfeed him first thing in the morning, 1-2 times during the day if possible (some days with meetings and appointments it’s not), and every night before he goes to sleep. And that’s in addition to his daily bottles of formula (anywhere from 10-20 ounces per day). And so, for the first time ever, I don’t see “the end” in sight. I can actually envision breastfeeding as we are for the foreseeable future. I am so grateful for that.

Happy Wednesday! Thanks for stopping by.
